5 ways to get out of your slump and make each day productive.
We’ve all been there. That feeling of being stuck in a rut, where everything seems overwhelming, and motivation is nowhere to be found. Life can throw us into slumps that make it hard to get out of bed, let alone tackle our to-do lists. The good news is, being in a slump is completely normal. Everyone experiences periods of low energy and productivity. What’s important is recognising the signs of slipping into laziness and taking proactive steps to regain control and get back on your feet.
Luckily, I’m here to help you get out of your slump. So in about 10 minutes, after reading what I have to say, you’ll be up on your feet, off of your laptop or your phone and ready to tackle whatever comes your way.
1. Motivation is a lie.
Why do you need to feel motivated so that you can tackle through your pile of clothes, or finally finish that assignment or decide to wash the dishes that have been sitting there for 2 days now? Every time you tell yourself you need “a boost of motivation” in order to get things done, you’re lying to yourself. you don’t need motivation, you need discipline. so here’s a quick tip ill let you in on. We call it the 5-minute rule. If you’re sitting on your phone for an hour scrolling through tiktok, reading old messages from your ex, or shopping online when you know you won’t buy any of it, pause for a moment and for just 5 minutes think to yourself – how will what I’m doing right now help my future self? probably not. so how about you stop disappointing your self and get up and do something productive. now of course, this won’t help you suddenly live a productive week. but its the first step to stopping yourself from falling deeper into your slump. so what do we do as soon as we realise we’re in a slump? We pause. we think. And we decide what we’re doing is not the best way to spend our time.
2. Make a list.
People love ticking things off. It gives us a small dose of dopamine and who doesn’t want a little dopamine now and then? This bring me to our second tip, which is making a list. If you have 4 problems you’re avoiding and you know deep down that that’s the reason you’re bed rotting the whole week, write the problems down. then write what needs to be done to solve them. Right now, open your notes app on your phone, or even better, open a journal and start making a list of all the things you need to be done. It could be big tasks like an assignment that’s due by Friday, or small tasks like cleaning your room. when you write it all down, that’ll make your “big problems” look really small and manageable.
3. Get off your phone.
so now that we know what we have to do and what we’re avoiding, we also know that by sitting in bed watching Netflix or scrolling through stories on instagram, we won’t get anything done. Social media drains you mentally and physically. So now put that phone away and get up. stretch a little. if you really want to get out of your slump, excuses shouldn’t be stopping you. you aren’t tired, you’re simply going through a lazy phase. and that’s all it is – a phase. so now how do we spend our time if we can’t be on our phone?
- spend some time in nature – yes I know you hear this a lot, but it. Is. True. trust me it is. Even a 15 minute walk outside will clear your head, that fresh air will instantly put you in a better mood.
- eat something healthy – A healthy gut is a healthy mind. And healthy doesn’t have to taste bad.
- listen to a good podcast.
- Read a book – fiction or non-fiction, pick up a good book and let your mind wonder in a good direction.
- tick off some things from that list
4. Meet up with friends
sometimes all we need is to step out of our lonesome and get a good conversation in, have some good food and laugh with our loved ones. Someone can step in and take a few things off your plate if you’re feeling overwhelmed. Just knowing that you’re not alone in how you’re feeling can make a big difference.
5. look forward to something.
Sometimes, you won’t feel like you have anything to be happy about, so create a reason to be excited for the week to come. Plan a small trip or get together with your family or friends. Or even a solo date at your favourite dessert place. whatever it is, having something to look forward to will help lift your mood and see the world as a much nicer place.
“a small step is still a step”
Every small step you take towards improvement is a victory. Celebrate these wins and keep pushing forward. The journey from a slump to success isn’t always easy, but with persistence and a positive mindset, you can achieve great things. Embrace the process, be kind to yourself, and remember that every day is a new opportunity to become the best version of you. You’ve got this!
